If you are a GovernmentNews subscriber, look out for my two page article in the May 2009 edition about the use of Twitter by local councils in Australia:
A case of the Twitters?
Councils are defined by their geographic areas, but the nature of the relationships with their communities has changed.
While focused on Twitter, more broadly this article is about the relevance of social media to local communities even if the technology has the capability to scale regardless of geography. I’ve actually noticed that people are following people on Twitter based on their location, so ‘local’ connections are clearly still an important way for people to identify commonality and interest with other users.
Incidentally, this article is an expanded and edited version of this post over on my own blog.

– I find this so exciting … Gen X & Y taking up the baton from babyboomer community activists !! now Gen X& Y use Web 2.0 / social media to take participation on decisionmaking in their communities to the next level
Babyboomer activists picked up Bulletin Board / Email / Web 1.0 technologies to engage in their communities in the 1990’s
then governments pushed back in the 21st century against increased community consultation & participation
– what did it give us?? “ICAC & Gong Gate!”
now gen X especially are saying enough is enough
go for it !! I am so excited to see it happening !!
Go Gen X & Y !!
